30 Day Song Challenge day 07 – a song that reminds you of a certain event. 9/11/01 Tuesday Morning I am riding to work on the North Side Of Austin. Beautiful, cool morning. I turn on the radio and hear what must be the middle of a bit that I came in late on. I switch channels and realize it is the same everywhere I turn. I go back to KLBJ and they are running the news from New York. I start to put things together, slowly at first, a building has been hit by a plane, then another. I started to get quite nervous and then a 10 second pause on the radio that felt like 10 minutes and then I hear gasps followed by “Oh my God, they blew up the Pentagon” I was a hair away from slamming on the breaks and returning home. Instead I went in to my temporary job where the front desk lady had her radio going. I will never forget going to my desk, horrified at what I was picturing going on up North and to the East. Throughout the day I would ask co-workers if they knew any updates. I will never forget one girl saying to me “Wow, you’re really freaked out about this aren’t you?” And it striking me so weird that I was in a moment that a lot of people hadn’t reached yet as they weren’t quite aware of the situation as of yet, but soon would be. Now here is where the song comes in. I distinctly remember Dale Dudley in the middle of all this, apologizing to sponsors as he wasn’t going to air the commercials at this time. And then later on I remember him playing this song and breaking from their talk format. The thing is, I don’t know if it happened like this. I don’t know if these are two separate memories from two separate days, or if this was all in that same morning. But I match the song to the event regardless.
